
How to actually keep your pergola warm (without wasting energy)
Let’s be honest: most outdoor pergolas are great in July and completely useless in October. You want to sit outside, but the second a breeze hits, you’re shivering. That’s why we build waterproof infrared heaters. Most heaters try to warm up the air around you, but in an open-air pergola, that heat just floats away into the sky. It’s a waste. Infrared is different. It beams heat directly onto you and your guests. It feels like standing in a patch of sunlight on a crisp morning.
Built for the elements
Outdoor gear takes a beating. Rain, humidity, and wind don’t play nice with electronics. We use IP-rated housings and sealed-up wiring because the last thing you want is a short circuit during a rainstorm. We use short-wave lamps for a reason:**they’re fast.**You don’t have to stand around waiting for a coil to glow red. You flip a switch, and you feel the heat instantly. Just a heads-up on the power side—these things pull a decent amount of juice (usually between 1500W and 3000W). If you’re installing a bunch of them in different zones, just double-check that your breakers can handle the load so you don’t trip the power the moment the party starts.
Making it “Smart”
The real magic happens when you stop messing with wall switches. By hooking the heaters up to a gateway via Zigbee, Matter, or Wi-Fi, you can basically automate your comfort. Here is how we usually set it up: we link the heater to an outdoor temperature sensor. Once it hits 10°C, the heaters just… kick in. No one has to get up and fiddle with a thermostat while they’re shivering. Plus, you can just tell your voice assistant to “Warm up the patio” while you’re still inside making drinks. By the time you walk out, the space is already cozy.
A few things to watch out for
Since infrared is so intense, placement is everything. If you hang the units too low, the people sitting right underneath are going to feel like they’re being toasted. We suggest mounting them at least 2.5 meters up. It spreads the heat more evenly and, more importantly, keeps your roofing material from getting scorched. Just make sure your install team checks the clearance before they drill anything in.
