
How to Actually Get Your bathroom Mirror to Stop Fogging Up
We’ve all been there. You step out of a hot shower, reach for the mirror to shave or do your makeup, and you’re staring at a wall of white mist. It’s annoying. The trick to fixing this is simple: you have to get the glass warmer than the air around it so the steam can’t settle. We use short-wave infrared lamps to do the heavy lifting here. The goal is to keep things crystal clear without accidentally cracking your mirror or running up your electric bill. Getting the power right You can’t just throw a high-wattage bulb at every mirror and call it a day. If you have a small vanity mirror, a 50W to 100W lamp is usually plenty. If you go overboard with the power on a small piece of glass, you risk creating too much thermal stress around the edges. Not a great look. But for those big walk-in shower mirrors? You’ll need more muscle. We usually go with 200W to 500W setups. The key is making sure the heat spreads evenly. If you go too low on the wattage, you’ll end up with those frustrating “cold spots” where the fog just clings to the corners. Why quartz matters We use high-purity quartz glass for these lamps. Why? Because quartz can handle being switched on and off rapidly without burning out. Plus, most of these use R7s snap-in connectors. This means when a bulb eventually dies, you just pop a new one in. No need to rip open the wall or rewire the whole fixture. The best part is how it feels. Unlike those old-school heating pads that take forever to warm up, infrared radiation hits the glass almost instantly. You turn it on, and the fog just… vanishes. A few things to watch out for Here is the catch: more power means faster defogging, but it also makes your bathroom feel like a sauna. You also need to be careful with how you mount the lamp. Give it some breathing room. If the lamp is pressed tight against the back of the mirror, you’re creating a heat trap. Over time, that trapped heat can actually eat away at the silver backing of your mirror. Just leave a small air gap. It lets the heat move naturally and keeps your mirror looking new for a lot longer.
