
Stop the Chips: Why We Preheat Our Glass
Glass is stubborn. It’s brittle, and when you drive a cutting wheel into a cold sheet, you aren’t just making a line—you’re creating a million tiny micro-fractures. Most of the time, those fractures just run wild. That’s how you end up with those annoying jagged edges or a corner that just blows out when you go to break it. It’s frustrating. But there’s a way to fix it. We use infrared (IR) preheating.
How it actually works
Think of cold glass as being “tense.” It’s holding onto a lot of internal stress. By hitting the surface with short-wave infrared heat right before the cut, we basically tell the glass to relax. It lowers the viscosity and lets the material breathe. When the cutting head finally hits, the crack doesn’t wander. It follows a straight, controlled path. The result? A clean, crisp break. No shards, no jagged bits, no headaches.
Why bother with IR lamps?
We use quartz halogen IR lamps because they’re fast. Really fast. If you use a convection oven, you’re wasting a ton of time heating up the air around the glass. It’s inefficient. IR energy is different—it jumps straight into the glass. Because we can concentrate that energy into a tight spot exactly where the cutter is headed, we don’t have to stop the line to let the whole sheet “soak” in the heat. We keep moving.
The tricky part (The Trade-offs)
Now, it’s not just “plug and play.” Adding a preheating bank means you’re pulling more power. If you go for a high-wattage setup to speed things up, you’ve got to make sure your cooling fans can keep up. If those lamp housings get too hot, you’ll end up warping your mounts or frying your wiring. Then there’s the temperature balance. If you crank it too high, you risk thermal shock or actually warping the glass. Too low? Right back to the chipping problem. Most of us find the sweet spot is somewhere between 60°C and 100°C, depending on how thick the glass is. The trick is using a solid PID controller to keep that heat steady across the whole sheet. Once you nail that setting, everything just flows.
